Fingerprint #50: “Unity”
by Barbara W. Watler

The Fingerprint Series began approximately four years ago. They give identity to the ordinary person in a complex world concentrated on electronic technology that disidentifies and dehumanizes people. In this series I am deliberately expanding the size of the fingerprints to give them an importance and drama that is currently not available to most of us. The exploded size provides viewers with a new way to see themselves ... as extraordinary and important in the universal scheme of life.

The complete textile work, Fingerprint#50: “Unity” will be 90”wide by 60” high. Each of the 216 five inch squares will be individually thread painted on the sewing machine and joined together with machine stitching.

Tuesday, Friday & Saturday through between the hours of 11am and 4pm through March 29, 2005 Museum visitors may watch Barbara create Fingerprint #50: “Unity” in the library gallery.

Thread Painting Statement
Ten years ago I began using thread painting in my large textiles and became fascinated with the idea of painting with thread in ways similar to my painting with oils, acrylics, and pastels. Beginning with the darks and lights I stitch in an underpainting, then build the stitches to completely cover the surface. I use two or three layers of canvas as a base for the stitches. I enjoy the zen-like quality of straight machine stitching and am challenged by the effort of keeping even the smallest shapes intact.
