OPEN
SPACE, A GIANT MOSAIC TILE CHAIR,
IS ADDED TO SCULPTURE GARDEN
The
Coral Springs Museum of Art held a special dedication ceremony
for the new mosaic tile sculpture called Open Space on Monday,
May 24.
Speeches by Museum Director Barbara K. O'Keefe and Artist
Pat Campau preceded the unveiling of the artwork by members
of the Museum Board and community residents. Certificates
and mosaic hands were presented to the generous sponsors of
the project and the attendees adjourned to the Museum for
a short reception.
Pat
Campau was the Museum's Artist in Residence for 2004. During
March, April and May, Pat worked on the sculpture in the Museum's
Sculpture Garden. Museum visitors were invited to participate
by cutting pieces of tile and adding them to the sculpture.
The creative process in progress was enjoyed by groups of
school children and visitors as this new scuplture project
evolved.
Open
Space consists of an oversized chair, ottoman and rug. The
chair and ottoman are tiled in blue with green words. The
words form a fabric pattern and are associated with nature
and home. The rug is patterned in reds, oranges and golds.
There is a pillow with Florida, a palm tree and sun in the
chair and a coffee cup on the arm of the chair. On the ottoman
is the book, River of Grass, by Marjorie Stoneman Douglas.
The use of tile is symbolic of the earth and of the long tradition
and culture of tile used in South Florida.
Open
Space completes the 4th Artist in Residence Program for the
Coral Springs Museum of Art. Three sculptures and one relief
ceramic tile mural are now part of the permanent collection
of the Coral Springs Museum of Art. |
