Lothar
Nickel spent the summer of 2001 in his studio in Pietrasanta,
Italy, where he selected an 8,500 pound piece of Carrara marble
for the Coral Springs Museum of Art. He was the Museum's Artist
in Residence from January 19 until March 30, 2002. “Himalama”
is the second piece commissioned for the Museum's collection,
and is on permanent display in the Sculpture Garden.
Museum
visitors were invited to watch the entire working process
of stone carving, from the rough block to the finished sculpture.
Lothar taught a children's sculpture class in which the students
learned about marble and created finished sculptures.
